Why visit Zurich?

Zurich is not a cheap city. It was ranked the world's most expensive city in 2025. But a lot of the best things here are free, such as the lakeside promenade, Lindenhof hill and walking through the Old Town. The city is small enough that you can see the main sights on foot, and the train network can take you to the Alps for a day trip.

What is the best time to visit Zurich?

The answer depends on what you want from the trip.

  • June to September: Warm weather, lake swimming, outdoor events. Temperatures are usually around 18 to 28 degrees Celsius. This is also the most expensive time. The Street Parade (a huge techno festival) takes over the lakefront in August, so book early if your dates overlap.

  • October to November: Autumn colours on Uetliberg and along the river, and hotel prices tend to be lower.

  • December: Christmas markets with mulled wine and roasted chestnuts. The market at the main station has around 120 stalls. It is cold, though, with temperatures from about minus 2 to 7 degrees Celsius from October to February.

  • March to May: Fewer crowds, blooming parks and lower prices. Good for budget travellers.

If you want the cheapest trip, November to March usually has the lowest hotel rates (except around Christmas).

Do Indians need a visa for Zurich?

Yes. Switzerland is part of the Schengen Area, so Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa (Type C) before travelling. Having a US or UK visa does not remove this requirement.

Quick points:

  • The application is submitted through VFS Global for the Swiss embassy in New Delhi.

  • Apply early, ideally 6 to 8 weeks before travel. Getting an appointment slot can be the hardest part.

  • The visa fee for adults is around 90 euros, plus VFS service charges. Fees change, so check the official website before applying.

  • Your passport should be valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen Area, and it should be less than 10 years old.

  • Travel insurance with Schengen-compliant medical cover, flight and hotel bookings, and proof of funds are normally required.

  • A Schengen visa allows up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

How to reach Zurich: flights and Zurich airport transfer

Zurich Airport (ZRH) is the main gateway to the city. From India you can fly via Dubai, Doha and other hubs, and some schedules have non-stop Delhi to Zurich flights.

Most travellers need a Zurich airport transfer on the first day of the trip, usually after a long flight, so it helps to know your options before you land. The airport is close to the city, and every option below takes roughly 10 to 35 minutes. Here is a quick comparison.

Zurich airport transfer by train

This is the option most visitors choose. The station is inside the terminal, so just follow the signs from the arrivals area. Trains to Zurich main station (HB) leave every 5 to 10 minutes from early morning (around 5 am) until just after midnight, and the ride takes 10 to 15 minutes. Tickets are sold at the SBB counter and the platform machines. A regular 3-zone ticket from the city to the airport costs CHF 7.20 now and goes up to CHF 7.40 from 13 December 2026, when the new ZVV tariff starts. Be careful with zones, because a basic city-zone ticket does not cover the airport. The Zürich Card covers the airport to main station trip, so you do not need a separate ticket if you have it.

Zurich airport transfer by tram

Tram line 10 leaves from right outside the arrivals hall and reaches the city in about 35 minutes. It is slower than the train but uses the same fare and is also covered by the Zürich Card.

Zurich airport transfer by taxi or Uber

Taxis wait outside the arrivals halls. The standard fare is a flat starting charge of CHF 6 plus CHF 3.80 per kilometre, which usually comes to around CHF 60 for the city centre, and extra charges can apply if you have a lot of luggage. Uber is often cheaper, at around CHF 30 to 40 depending on traffic and demand. Both take about 20 minutes.

Private Zurich airport transfer

A pre-booked private Zurich airport transfer is the most comfortable choice if you travel with family, a larger group or heavy luggage, or if you arrive very late. The driver waits for you in the arrivals hall, the vehicle is only for your group, and you can choose a sedan, a van or a minivan depending on how many people and bags you have. Prices usually start from about CHF 100, so ask for a fixed price before you book.

Which Zurich airport transfer should you choose?

For one or two travellers, the train is the best mix of speed and price. For a group of four or more with big suitcases, a private transfer or taxi can work out similar per person and saves the effort of carrying bags through the station. Note that all prices above are approximate and can change.

Getting around Zurich city

Within the city: Zurich runs on the ZVV network, one ticket system for trams, buses, S-Bahn trains, lake boats and some funicular. Tickets are sold at machines, in the ZVV app and in the SBB app. Ticket checks happen regularly and fines are high, so always carry a valid ticket.

Top places to visit in Zurich

1. Old Town (Altstadt)

This is the number one thing to do. Walk through cobblestone lanes on both sides of the Limmat river. On the left bank, Augustinergasse is lined with colourful buildings, small shops and cafes. On the right bank, the Niederdorf area mixes old guild houses with galleries, beer cellars and nightlife.

2. Grossmünster, Fraumünster and St. Peter's Church

These churches define the Zurich skyline.

  • Grossmünster: The twin-tower cathedral from the 13th century. You can climb 187 steps to the top for city views (separate ticket needed).

  • Fraumünster: Famous for stained glass windows designed by Marc Chagall in the 1960s. Visit in the morning when sunlight shines through them.

  • St. Peter's: One of the oldest churches in the city, with the largest clock face in Europe.

3. Lindenhof Hill

A short, gentle climb from the Old Town to a quiet square with old linden trees, a fountain, Roman-era remains and a lovely view over the river and rooftops. It is free and a great place to relax.

4. Bahnhofstrasse

One of the most expensive shopping streets in the world, running from the main station to the lake. You do not need to buy anything. Just walk, enjoy the window displays and stop at a chocolate shop such as Sprüngli.

5. Lake Zurich and the Limmat River

Walk the lakeside promenade, take a boat cruise or, in summer, swim at one of the public lake baths (called "badis"). For a good view, go to Bürkliterrasse at the end of Bahnhofstrasse. Boats also go from the city to lakeside towns like Rapperswil.

6. Uetliberg

Zurich's own mountain. A train from the main station reaches the top in around 20 minutes, followed by a short walk to the viewpoint. On clear days you can see the Alps, and on foggy days the peak rises above the clouds. You can also reach the Felsenegg viewpoint by cable car, which is included in the Zürich Card.

7. Kunsthaus Zurich

The largest art museum in Switzerland. It has works by Picasso, Van Gogh, Pollock and Warhol, plus a large Giacometti collection and the biggest Edvard Munch collection outside Norway.

8. Swiss National Museum

A castle-like building with exhibits on Swiss history from the Middle Ages to today. The river cruise through the Old Town also starts near here, and Platzspitz Park is right outside.

9. Lindt Home of Chocolate

A chocolate museum about 20 minutes from the city by bus, with a huge chocolate fountain, tasting and a chance to make your own. Book tickets in advance because slots fill up fast.

10. Polybahn and Polyterrasse

A short 3-minute ride on a historic red funicular takes you to a terrace with views of the city, lake and Alps. It is free with the Zürich Card.

11. Zurich West

A former industrial area turned into a trendy district. Visit the railway arches (Im Viadukt) with shops and the Markthalle food market, Frau Gerolds Garten, and the Freitag store built from stacked shipping containers.

12. Free drinking fountains

Zurich has more than 1,200 public drinking fountains with clean tap-quality water. Carry a bottle and refill it for free instead of buying water.

Is the Zürich Card worth it?

The Zürich Card is a pass for visitors staying 1 to 3 days.

Validity

Adult

Child (6 to 15 years)

24 hours

CHF 29

CHF 19

72 hours

CHF 56

CHF 37

What you get:

  • Unlimited 2nd class travel on tram, bus, train, boat and cable car in the city and surrounding zones

  • Free or reduced entry to most museums

  • 10 to 20 percent discounts in selected shops

  • 50 percent off public city tours by Zürich Tourism

It also covers the trip between the airport and the main station, which alone saves a few francs. If you plan to visit two or three museums and use public transport a lot, it usually pays for itself. If you only plan to walk around the Old Town and lake, a normal ticket may be cheaper. Prices from December 2026 may change, so check the final price when you buy.

What to eat in Zurich

  • Zürcher Geschnetzeltes: The signature dish of Zurich. Sliced veal in a creamy mushroom sauce, usually served with rösti. Expect to pay around CHF 28 to 42.

  • Cheese fondue: Melted cheese with bread, around CHF 25 to 35 per person at many places and more at fancy restaurants.

  • Rösti: Crispy grated potato, often topped with cheese or egg.

  • Raclette: Melted cheese scraped over potatoes and pickles.

  • Swiss chocolate: From Sprüngli, Honold and small local chocolatiers.

  • Street food: A bratwurst or kebab costs around CHF 8 to 14.

For vegetarians and Indian travellers: Hiltl in Zurich is known as the world's oldest vegetarian restaurant and has a big buffet. Fondue and rösti are naturally vegetarian, though check that the cheese is made without animal rennet if that matters to you. Zurich also has several Indian and Sri Lankan restaurants, which are useful for budget meals.

How much does a Zurich trip cost?

Zurich is expensive, so plan your budget early. As a rough idea (prices change, so treat these as estimates):

  • Fast food or street meal: CHF 10 to 20

  • Inexpensive restaurant meal: CHF 25 to 35

  • Traditional Swiss main course: CHF 28 to 42

  • Coffee: can reach around CHF 7 in the city centre

  • 72-hour Zürich Card: CHF 56

  • Zurich airport transfer: about CHF 7 by train, CHF 30 to 40 by Uber, around CHF 60 by taxi, and from about CHF 100 for a private transfer

In early 2026, one Swiss franc was roughly 95 to 100 rupees, so check the live exchange rate before you travel. Prices in rupees add up fast.

Money-saving tips:

  • Use free attractions: the lake, Lindenhof, Zurich West, Old Town walks.

  • Refill your bottle at public fountains.

  • Eat your main meal at lunch, when many restaurants have cheaper set menus.

  • Buy picnic food from supermarkets.

  • Travel in November or March to May for lower hotel prices.
